The Cross and the Criminal

There was a time when I would defiantly say that I was not to blame for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. "I didn’t ask Him to die for me," would be my foolish words. "I wasn’t even there when it happened," would be another line in my ungodly justification for my vile attitudes. But the Truth is something that none of us can run from:
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Romans 5:6
The above statement comes from the Word of God. It stands alone and does not need any explanation or logical proof to substantiate its validity. And yet I testify before you that Jesus did die for me and in my place. You see, had I been physically present in Jerusalem during that fateful day, I would have screamed the words in unison with the masses gathered before Pontius Pilate:
And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them. But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.
Luke 23:18-21
But how could I be so sure that I would have joined the crowd in choosing the release of Barabbas? First of all, I have many times in my life, been angry enough at God to have cried out the words "crucify Him." What was the source of my anger? Myself. I have suffered many tragic things in my life. And most of those things were the consequences of my own actions. On many occasions I found myself penniless and sick. Nothing seemed to be going "my way." And I had fooled myself into blaming God for all of my problems when in fact it was Him who loved me and carried me through every dark moment in my life. But I was too blind to see this. I blamed Him for everything. And just like that day on Calvary , our Lord Jesus was innocent of any charge. I was penniless and sick because of my drinking and drug use. At one point I even blamed God for my drug use. But again the charge leveled against the Holy One proved untrue. At any time in my life I could have turned to Him but instead I turned to drugs and alcohol. So it was I who was to blame for my own misfortunes. But God, in His goodness and mercy, led me out of my self inflicted wilderness:
Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
Romans 2:4
And so much like Barabbas, I stood guilty before God and worthy of His judgment:
But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
Romans 2:5-6
But instead of wrath, God showed mercy upon me. He allowed His Own Son to be crucified in a most humiliating way. Jesus died in the stead of Barabbas. Jesus died in the stead of the crowd shouting for His crucifixion. Jesus died in the stead of me.
I am a criminal. I am a sinner. I, not Jesus, am deserving of a death sentence:
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Romans 1:29-32
Sick, desperate, and in dire need of help (in dire need of salvation), Jesus did for me what neither I nor anyone else could have done:
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:13
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:7-8
Even though Christ died for us, He has risen and is alive. This brings hope and victory:
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Romans 5:9-10
